UPDATE – Retention of Dental Records
On 8th April 2022 the NHS reduced its retention period for dental records from 10 years to 8 years. The email containing this update provided no explanation for the change.
On 14th April 2022 we therefore did a Freedom of Information Act request to find out the reasoning behind this change.
On 17th May 2022 we received a response. The NHS provided this document, setting out the reasons for the change. In essence, the NHS considers that any wrong doing or fraud will be discovered within the 8 year period. If any complaint is made within that period, retention periods can be paused whilst the complaint is investigated.
